Star Gazing… for real

By viki | September 4, 2007

Went to an unusual kind of party the other night…it’s called a Star Party. No autographs, limos, or red carpets….. Huh you say scratching your head.

It’s called a Star party because it was for star gazing, as in straight up to the heavens.

A truth about me is I am frustrated radio astronomer and I LOVE the Cosmos. I scoop all that my brain can wrap around and, am finding the  public friendly approach Carl Sagan began in the 70’s has taken on a life of it’s own and has picked up speed.

It seems that his style and his approach to helping everyone understand the cosmos, and our origins in an easy to grasp, fun and entertaining manner is alive and well today.

The host of the Star gazing party was none other than Mike Lynch a local meteorologist for WCCO radio.

Mike was just great, he entertained, educated, told stories, and made the wait for the twinkle of the stars to appear, to pass quickly!  It was really a lot of fun. It beats going to a planetarium anyday… and even the bugs weren’t too bad.

Mike is on the left, then me, then my brother and Mom

when you star gaze, you either coat yourself in Deep Woods OFF, ot you coat yourself in sweatshirts, sweaters, and  well coats….because some of the best star watching is when it’s Chilly!

That’s me looking through a "smaller" scope. It was so incredible to see such detail on the Moon!  I thought i could just reach out and touch it, it felt so close!  Wow

Now take a look at the Big daddy scope, that brought star clusters so close you could see a binary star really well…that’s a 2 star or double sun system!  see how much I learned!

Here is mike Lynch with his Big scope, it’s so tall you need a ladder to see through the eye piece.

All in all a great evening, and a great turn out…there were a lot of people there,  but it was worth the wait in line to see  a glimpse at the stars..like that
